OVHcloud: Europe's Cloud Giant — Who It's For and Why

A review of OVHcloud — Europe's largest cloud provider. When to choose European cloud, pricing, and potential pitfalls.

The Problem: Why You’d Need “European Cloud” At All

Scenario: a German health-tech startup. Patient data must physically reside within the EU — this is required by GDPR and national legislation. AWS and Azure offer the eu-central-1 region, but the provider is American and thus subject to the Cloud Act: US authorities can request data regardless of where it’s physically stored.

Or another case: SaaS for European banks. Auditors require that the cloud vendor chain stays entirely within the EU. GCP Frankfurt technically qualifies, but Google is an American corporation.

In both cases, the answer is a European cloud provider. And the largest of them is OVHcloud.

What OVHcloud Offers

A French company founded in 1999. 400,000 servers across 34 data centers on 4 continents. The key difference from American clouds: OVHcloud owns its physical data centers, servers, and even its proprietary water cooling system. It’s not an AWS reseller — it’s a manufacturer.

Core Products:

  • Bare Metal — dedicated servers, the flagship product
  • Public Cloud — virtual instances on OpenStack
  • Hosted Private Cloud — VMware/Hyper-V clusters
  • Web Hosting — classic website hosting
  • Domain Names — one of Europe’s largest registrars

Strengths

Real GDPR Compliance. OVHcloud is a French company, not subject to the Cloud Act. Data physically resides in the EU and is managed by European staff. Certified to ISO 27001, HDS (French healthcare data standard), and SecNumCloud.

Bare Metal Pricing. A dedicated server with Intel Xeon, 64 GB RAM, 2×512 GB NVMe starts at €90/month. For comparison, a similar dedicated host on AWS costs from $450/month. The 3–5x difference over the long term means hundreds of thousands of euros in savings.

Anti-DDoS Included. DDoS protection comes standard with every server at no extra cost. The VAC (Votre Anti-DDoS Cluster) technology filters up to 6 Tbps at the network level.

Where It Falls Short

The Strasbourg Fire (2021). In March 2021, a fire destroyed data center SBG2 and damaged SBG1. Customer data without backups in other regions was irretrievably lost. OVHcloud learned from this: fire suppression systems were upgraded and backup policies were overhauled. But the incident highlighted a cultural difference: AWS designs services so that losing an entire data center doesn’t mean data loss.

Complex Interface. OVHcloud’s control panel is a legacy of the “built by engineers for engineers” era. Nested menus, unintuitive navigation, a mix of French and English in the documentation. By 2026 things have improved, but it’s still far from AWS/GCP console quality.

Limited Managed Services. OVH offers managed MongoDB, Kafka, Redis, and Kubernetes — but depth of implementation trails AWS/GCP. There are no serverless functions as a category. For a startup built on lambdas, OVHcloud simply isn’t an option.

Regional Coverage

OVHcloud data centers: France (6), Germany (3), UK (2), Poland (2), Canada (2), USA (2), Singapore (1), Australia (1), India (1).

For a European project, this is nearly ideal. Frankfurt and Warsaw cover Central and Eastern Europe; Paris and Roubaix cover Western Europe. London serves the British market.

Asia is represented by a single data center in Singapore — insufficient for Southeast Asia and inadequate for China, Korea, and Japan.

Partner Program

OVHcloud offers a three-tier partner program: Silver, Gold, and Platinum. Commission is earned as a percentage of referred customers’ monthly payments (revenue share). For freelance affiliates, a simplified model is available: a percentage of the customer’s first payment. Registration is through the Partner Program on the OVHcloud website.

Who Should Use OVHcloud

Choose OVHcloud if:

  • You need physical data residency in the EU for legal reasons
  • You need competitively priced bare-metal servers
  • Your project doesn’t require deep managed services
  • Your budget is limited and your workload is predictable

Skip OVHcloud if:

  • Your project relies on serverless architecture
  • You need out-of-the-box multi-region active-active failover
  • Control panel usability is critical
  • Your primary audience is in Asia or South America

Verdict

OVHcloud is not a competitor to AWS in the managed services segment. But in its niche — European sovereign hosting and honestly priced bare metal — it’s a strong choice. For any business where GDPR compliance matters more than the breadth of cloud services, OVHcloud remains the best option in Europe.
