The Pain
Every developer knows this moment: you open Jira to update a task status, and it takes 8 seconds to load. Then 5 more seconds to open the board. Then the Comment field lags as you type. The admin has configured 14 custom fields, 8 statuses, and a workflow nobody understands — including the admin themselves.
Jira is the industry standard. But it’s the standard everyone hates.
In 2019, a team of former Airbnb, Uber, and Stripe engineers decided they’d had enough. They built Linear (linear.app) — a task tracker that loads instantly, looks beautiful, and doesn’t try to be “everything for everyone.”
The Solution
Linear doesn’t try to replace Jira as a platform. It does exactly what a development team needs: track issues, sprints, bugs, and roadmap. That’s it.

Real Experience
A team of 12 developers migrated to Linear in early 2025. Before: Jira Cloud.
What changed:
- Sprint planning: from 2 hours to 40 minutes. Drag-and-drop + auto capacity estimation.
- Standup: 10 minutes instead of 20. Everyone sees their tasks, no context-switching.
- Search: Cmd+K → “my bugs this week” → instant results. In Jira, the same query required JQL.
- Integrations: GitHub + Slack + Figma + Sentry. Status changes sync automatically.
What was lost:
- Custom fields like “Field 37: Internal Department Code K.” Linear won’t give you that.
- Time tracking. Only estimates. Not suitable for client billing.
- Complex workflows. Maximum: Backlog → Todo → In Progress → In Review → Done. If you need 8 statuses with different SLAs, look elsewhere.
Verdict
Linear isn’t a Jira killer and doesn’t try to be. It’s a tool for teams that understand task management shouldn’t be complicated. If you’re a startup or product team under 50 people — switch without hesitation. If you’re an enterprise with 500 employees and a 12-level workflow — stay on Jira, Linear isn’t your tool.
