Contabo VPS Review: German Hosting with the Best Price-to-Performance Ratio

In-depth Contabo review — the German hosting provider with some of the cheapest VPS on the market. Cloud VPS, VDS plans, pros and cons.

Contabo is a German phenomenon. When you look at their prices, your first thought is: “What’s the catch?” Because 4 vCPU, 8 GB RAM, and 50 GB NVMe for €5.50/month is a price that barely exists in the VPS market. Let’s dig into the secret and whether it’s worth it.

Cloud VPS Pricing Grid

As of July 2026, the Cloud VPS lineup looks like this:

Plan vCPU RAM Disk Price/mo
Cloud VPS S 4 8 GB 75 GB NVMe / 150 GB SSD €5.50
Cloud VPS M 6 12 GB 100 GB NVMe / 200 GB SSD €7.50
Cloud VPS L 8 24 GB 200 GB NVMe / 400 GB SSD €14.00
Cloud VPS XL 12 48 GB 250 GB NVMe / 500 GB SSD €25.00
Cloud VPS XXL 16 64 GB 300 GB NVMe / 600 GB SSD €37.00

On top of that, there are Cloud VDS (virtual dedicated servers) — starting at €27.50/month with 6 vCPU and 24 GB RAM, but with guaranteed CPU resources (unlike regular VPS, where cores are shared). And full bare-metal servers from €99/month.

Contabo’s biggest selling point: unlimited traffic on all plans. Not “conditionally unlimited” with fair use, but truly unlimited. For projects with high bandwidth consumption, this is a killer feature.

Hardware and Performance

Contabo uses AMD EPYC processors in its data centers (Germany, US, Singapore). On the lower-tier plans, cores are shared (shared vCPU). This means your 4 cores share a physical core with other customers. As long as your neighbors aren’t hammering the CPU — everything flies. During peak hours, some throttling is possible.

This is exactly where the “catch” lies. Contabo operates on an overselling model — selling more virtual resources than there are physical ones. The bet is that most customers don’t use their resources at 100% simultaneously. For 90% of projects, this works great. For the remaining 10% — there’s Cloud VDS with guaranteed cores.

Disks: NVMe on lower plans — 75 GB. You can pick an SSD variant with double the capacity but lower speed. For databases and high-traffic sites — go NVMe, no question.

Pros

  • Price. Simply the best on the market. For €5.50 you get resources that cost €15–20 at competitors.
  • Unlimited traffic. A rarity. Perfect for CDN nodes, streaming, file sharing.
  • Global locations. Germany, US (East and Central coast), Singapore. Pick the one closest to your audience.
  • Snapshots. 1–3 free snapshots depending on the plan.
  • DDoS protection. Basic, but included on all plans.
  • Transparent billing. No surprises at renewal — the price is fixed.

Cons

  • Overselling. If you’re running CPU-intensive tasks (rendering, machine learning) — go with VDS or dedicated.
  • Port speed. Lower plans: 200 Mbit/s. Mid-tier: 300–600 Mbit/s. Gigabit only with Cloud VPS XXL (€37/month). At competitors (Hetzner, Netcup), gigabit often comes with entry-level plans.
  • Support. It works, but not always fast. Average response time: an hour or two. Weekends can be longer. Doesn’t reach DigitalOcean live-chat levels.
  • Control panel. Functional but outdated. No API like Vultr or sleek graphs like Hetzner Cloud.
  • Setup fee. Monthly payments incur a setup fee. Free only with annual billing.

Use Cases

Contabo is ideal for projects that need lots of memory and disk space for little money:

  • Hosting multiple sites on a single server (via Docker or directly)
  • Dev environments, CI/CD runners
  • File storage, Nextcloud
  • Game servers (modded Minecraft, Factorio, Valheim)
  • VPN nodes with high traffic consumption
  • Mail servers
  • Plex/Jellyfin media servers

For production environments with strict CPU stability requirements — go with Cloud VDS.

Verdict

Contabo is a trade-off. You sacrifice peak CPU performance and port speed, but get two to three times more resources for the same money. For startups, pet projects, dev environments, and light production workloads — an excellent choice. For mission-critical applications where CPU stability is essential — look toward VDS or other providers.

8/10. The best resource-to-price ratio on the VPS market in 2026.
