CDN Performance
Both services use multi-CDN architecture:
- Vercel: proprietary Edge Network on AWS CloudFront + Cloudflare in some regions. 90+ points of presence. TTFB for static sites: 45–80 ms (globally). SSR via Edge Functions: 50–200 ms.
- Netlify: multi-CDN on CloudFront, Fastly, and Google Cloud CDN. 70+ PoPs. Static TTFB: 50–90 ms. Netlify Edge Functions on Deno have slightly faster cold starts (50ms vs 200ms on Vercel Lambda) but narrower global coverage.
For globally distributed audiences, Vercel is slightly better in Asia. For European and American users, the difference is within 10–15 ms.
Developer Experience
Vercel bets on seamless Next.js experience. npx create-next-app → GitHub push → live site in 2 minutes. The Vercel CLI (vercel dev) emulates the production environment locally, including Edge Functions. ISR (Incremental Static Regeneration) works out of the box. But if you’re not on Next.js, Vercel’s advantage disappears — Nuxt and SvelteKit are supported but without the same depth.
Netlify is more framework-agnostic. Gatsby, Hugo, Eleventy, Astro, Remix — all work equally well. Netlify Dev CLI emulates Functions and Edge locally. Netlify CMS (Decap CMS) is an open-source headless CMS for static sites. Netlify Forms and Identity are unique features Vercel doesn’t have.
